AHMED was the only elephant protected by a presidential decree in Kenya.
He was thought to have had the largest known tusks on a living elephant and was a living symbol of the awareness of conservation. Even with round the clock protection by armed guards, there were numerous attempts on his life. A bullet hole can be seen on his right ear. With such a bounty on his head and despite many attempts on his life he was to die in 1974 aged about 55 years old. He was truly a survivor. His amazing tusks were recovered and can now be seen at the Nairobi Museum in Kenya.
